Conflicted...

To all my non-blogging (and blogging) readers out there...I apologize...this post is going to be oh-so boring to you. But come back tomorrow because I'm putting all my fall fashion wisdom (from one magazine read) into a bullet point list...not to be missed ;)

I am having some major issues regarding my blogroll! Now that I've been blogging awhile (5 months) I read a lot of blogs...my google reader says 86 to be exact. I decided it was time to update my blogroll, but HOW?!?

Here's my questions:
  • How many is too many for my blogroll?
  • Is it rude to read someone's blog regularly and never add them?
  • Is it ok to have my blogroll as a link rather than all alongside my sidebar?

Help. What criteria do you use to decide what makes the cut?!?

Tell me...what does your blogroll represent?!?

  1. being that i haven't even figured out how to add blogroll, i think that i am just rude, or a dummy..? so can't help you girl!!

  2. Blogroll links are cool! I only add a limited number to mine just because my family would like clean clothes and some type of food to eat sometime during the day. If I added too many, I would never get anything done. All depends on how much time you have to spend.

  3. Yours is the first link blogroll I have ever seen, but I like it! Not sure how many is too many for a blog roll. I am working on that one also!! If I find I regularly read someone's blog, I add it mainly for convenience sake. Is it rude no to add them? Not sure on that one, but it is always fun to see your blog on someone's blog roll, so I think it is nice to add those you read regularly to let them know that you enjoy it, but again how many is too many??!!
My blog roll represents blogs and women who have godly values and reflect them through blogging, those who I enjoy reading and who encourage me in my Christian walk.
Just another opinion! Have a blessed day.

  4. Not that I have a blogroll, but I like the idea of the link better than the whole list. It saves loading time!

I think blogrolls are a personal thing. Who, and why, you add is completely up to you, in my humble opinion of course!

  5. I am not sure what mine represents. Because although my blogroll/list shows the most frequently visited blogs, I also have some under my bookmark. Hmmm...

I have thought of revamping mine, but that is a lot of work.

I do like the new bloglist that shows last updates. It has really shortened my blog time cruising the blog world.

  6. I am so not the one to answer blog questions. I barely find the time to blog at all. Let us know what you find out.

  7. I think the blogroll link is perfectly fine...I've seen several others do it, and I think it makes the page look cleaner, especially if it's extensive. People will still click on it if they want to see it.

I currently have 72 in my reader, and only about 10 on the blogroll on my page...I desperately need to update. Not sure what I'm going to do, though...I don't think I can put 72 in my blogroll. Hmmm. I will probably for sure put all of the ones in that are regular visitors and commenters. Or something like that. You can see what a big help I am. :)

  8. I'm glad you asked! And I can't wait to see what advice you get. I'm kinda in the same boat ~ I don't know what to do~ I had thought about having the blogs I read AND comment on on my sidebar and then put the rest of my bloggy love on a seperate page. Kinda like boomama. Right now I do mine through blogrolling and love that it will let me know when a blog is updated. I use bloglines to read blogs but I find I use the blogrolling list on my sidebar more since when I read through bloglines I don't tend to "visit" the blog and leave a comment.
I agree that it is totally up to you who you put on your blogroll thing.
I do love going over blog lists on other peoples blog because I have found some GREAT blogs that way.
anyway, I have rambled on long enough. And I bet I said blog like a thousand times

  9. I have a list Sarah, but I definitely like the link - than you can add as many as your heart desires! Brevity is not as issue there. On your sidebar, it may be. :) I add my favorites... ones I want to check regularly, and family. If anyone in my family blogs, they make the list. That's pretty much my criteria: 1)family 2)I lurve you and don't want to miss a thing!
Now I have a question for you... how did you make your a link instead of a list??? I would LOVE to do something like that on my blog!! Please advise! :)

  10. I'd say 278 blogs on your blogroll might be pushing it for too many. Nobody is going to be offended for not being added, my dear. They just look at the comments you post on their site - they know you read it! Blogroll link is a good idea. However you like your page - we'll visit you either way!

  11. I currently have 103 feeds in my Bloglines account. Since using Bloglines, I did remove the list from my blog's sidebar, since I'm not sure which ones I'd post and which I'd eliminate, and I think over 100 is simply too many for a sidebar! :) Please note that I don't read every single one every day, nor do all of them even have a new post every day. There are probably about 15 that I read religiously each and every time there's a new post. I only comment when something in a post strikes me.

  12. I think it is perfectly fine to have your blogroll as a link...I actually like the idea. I have seen others do it and I think it looks nice and neat.

My blogroll represents 1)all the people I know in real life that blog and 2)the blogs that I comment on regularly and/or they comment on mine regularly.

  13. I don't read nearly enough blogs obviously. I definitely like the link list on the sidebar more, especially since Blogger has the new updated list that tells you when they have a new post up. I find that it itself has saved me time in my blog-reading because i don't have to go through my whole list, only the ones that have updated. Of course, I only read about 30 blogs and find a new one every now and then.

I find when the list is on the sidebar, other people are more likely to click on them rather than go to a whole other page, especially if they see that's they're updated. Also, it helps to give a shout-out to all my blogging friends ... you know share the love.

I guess my advice to you is to not add any more blogs to your blog-reading. I can't imagine reading that many in one day.

Oh, and if I start to read someone on a regular basis, I definitely add them to my blogroll. I guess, just as a courtesy.

Sorry to write a book. I will anxiously be awaiting your decisions and your fashion tips.

  14. I use bloglines to save time and I don't have a blogroll on my blog, mostly because sometimes I change what I read and I wouldn't want to hurt anyone, ya know. I'm not saying it's bad to have it posted, I just decided not to.

  15. I agree it is a confusing thing... not much written on blogging etiquette yet is there? I have more on my google reader than on my blog roll. I have 2 categories in my google reader... one of people I am "trying out" and the others that I read regularly.. those I read regularly are also on my blog roll. I don't use my blog roll as a means of checking the blogs since I use google reader. I guess I just do it as a way of sharing the bloggy love and letting others know which blogs I read with frequency. Also I have some friends that only let invited readers read their blogs, so they are not included on my blog roll.
How many is too many? Is a link ok or keep them on the main page? I think that is your call and up to what you want it to be. Sorry that wasn't that helpful!

BTW going to see Batman tonight with my hubby thanks to your review... so excited!!

  16. I have struggled with this one as well. I decided not to take anyone off my blog roll and mine is pretty huge, however, I no longer add anyone who asks me to add them simply because they ask. I do this because I want to keep up with the blogs on my roll and obviously cannot do this with hundreds...but I feel guilt.

  17. I often forget to add new blogs to my blogroll as I have found new ones I read. So I just update mine periodically. I don't have a very long list and need to add some new ones!

  18. Sarah, I like the link with the list but I keep my on a roll and I basically go down it every day to read those that mean alot to me.I feel priviledged to be on your list and I thank you for each comment. I do have mine on a reader but i dont really like that.I like to go and read and leave comments usually.
    Be blessed!

  19. Hi, Sarah - I like the sidebar personally, but the link is fine as well.

I think that a blogroll CAN get too large - that is one reason I began using the google reader. I started using another reader, but after you said you liked google reader I tried it and LOVE IT! My blogroll was too large - I save it for only my absolute favorites!!! I connect to google reader for the rest.

I am of the opinion that you can add whomever you wish on your blogroll and should not feel you MUST add anyone.

I think your blog is just Right!

  20. Link it up Baby!
I just received a fashion mailer and legging were deeply embedded in the fall fashion. Hopefully you will have more to add!

  21. I love the blogroll idea. I was actually thinking about adding it to mine. It looks a little cleaner...don't ya think? If my house can't be cleaner, at least I can make my blog life a little spick 'n span!

  22. I did this a long time ago...like in October and it came up Katherine Heigle and I was pleased. I should do it again.

  23. There is so much good info at blogging basics 101. Here is a link to a podcast They did about all this kind of stuff.

    Blogroll podcast

I keep my blogroll short and sweet. I have removed blogs if I stop reading them. I worry about hurting feelings but since I am such a people pleaser, I would have a blogroll seven miles long if I didn't restrict myself. I never remember to update it.

  24. Thanks for all the good input everybody! It all boils down to...do whateva you wanna.

Thanks Heth for the podcast...good info!

I've decided to keep my blogroll as a link for now and add as many as I like ;) but keep it to the ones I read/comment on regularly.

PS - I don't read 86 blogs everyday...that's just how many is in my reader...I have my fav's that I read if they've posted and others if the subject is catchy and many I have to just skip because...well, there is some other stuff to do ;)

    Thank you!!
